Hello everyone this is my first post.  I've been suffering from gout for the past 10 years.  Over time my attacks have become much worse and longer lasting.  I've had it in my feet, knees, right elbow, left wrist and my hip.  My attacks last for several weeks during which time I'm usually completely disabled and many times unable to even use crutches (can't use them when your knee is completely locked straight and your wrist is flared up and useless).  I usually have anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks of normalcy between attacks.  My latest flare up started in June 2009 and lasted through June 2010, with only maybe 6 weeks during that year somewhat pain free.  I've been totally bedridden in excruciating pain for 8 to 10 weeks at a time.  Colchicine sometimes helps but not usually.  Is this normal?  Everything I've read says gout attacks last for a few days and go away.  Am I just lucky to be the only person that seems to be in a constant gout attack?  My doctor started me on Allopurinol back in December, 200mg, and this past 3 weeks I seem to be doing better but am worried it's just another brief break before it returns.  I'm tired of being in pain and unable to work or even garden, which is my favorite pastime.  Frown

Seeing that you have been having attack for past 10 years I would say 200mg dosage of AlloP is too low. It took me 300mg of AlloP for close to 6 months before I finally seem to be getting control of my Gout. The whole Gout attack thing started for me only 1 year ago so in your case I think it will take  longer as you possibly have lot more uric acid crystal build up than me. Which is kind of confirmed by the fact that unlike me you have attacks in your knees, wrists….I assume toes too…..

So yes keep with the AlloP and increase the dosage to atleast 300mg. Also you don't mention anything about your SUA readings? Gout = controlling SUA levels and that is what AlloP at correct dosage is for. SUA numbers is directly proportional to your AlloP dosage. Wrong dosage means you are wasting your time.
